25 product reviews. 10 comparison guides. We have not handled these products, and we say so on every page. What we do instead is check the seller’s published figures against each other and tell you plainly what the listing does not disclose.

How we check things

We have not handled these products, and every page on this site says so. What we do instead is read what each seller publishes on its own live listing, record the date we read it, and hold those published figures up against each other and against the brand’s own site.

  • Every rating, review count and specification is read from the seller’s live listing or the brand’s own page — never from another review site. Where a page prints the date we read it, that is the date it was checked. About half our pages carry one today; we are adding them to the rest as each page is next re-checked, and we would rather say that plainly than imply it is already done.
  • Where a listing contradicts itself, we quote both figures rather than the flattering one.
  • Where a brand publishes a figure directly — burn hours, volume, materials — we check the listing against the brand’s own site and say which source the number came from.
  • Where a listing does not disclose something a buyer would want to know, we say that it does not, rather than filling the gap with an estimate.
  • Nothing is included because it pays more. Product links are affiliate links, and that affects neither what goes into a comparison nor the order things appear in.

Some things we found

Every one of these is checkable against the listing or the brand’s own page, which is the point of publishing them this way.

  • The best-selling blackout curtain on Amazon does not claim 100% blackout. It claims 85 to 99 per cent, and its own bullet says darker colours work better. Two products in the same comparison do claim 100% — and both of those are beige or white. Blackout curtains, listings read 2 September 2026
  • Two of three lamp listings contradict themselves, repeatedly. Rather than pick whichever figure flatters the product, we quote both and let the disagreement stand. Aesthetic lamps, listings read 30 August 2026
  • Burn time is moved more by technique than by brand. Get the first burn right, trim the wick and stop at three to four hours, and most luxury candles land near their stated figure. Skip that and the most expensive candle in the category will underperform the cheapest. Longest-burning candles and reed diffusers
  • A candle bought as a gift is judged on recognition, not on your own taste. If you do not know the recipient’s preferences — the usual case — buy recognisable, buy green or citrus, and buy something whose empty jar will still be on a shelf in a year. Luxury candles for gifting

Home Decor Adviser is an independent site. No brand pays for inclusion, placement or a favourable write-up, and we hold no relationship with any of the brands covered. Corrections are welcome and we would rather fix a figure than defend it.
